Milestone for the SDN Movement

Jul 27, 2012

This week marked another significant milestone for the Software-Defined Networking movement.  Open Networking Foundation member company Nicira has been acquired by VMWare – another ONF member.  What makes this acquisition such a milestone for our industry is not just the price tag on the deal - $1.26 Billion in cash - but the message that it sends to the technology community as a whole.  The flexibility afforded by SDN can drive tremendous business value. Our industry is putting its money where its mouth is to support our vision of virtualizing the network.

The SDN movement was created by pioneers who have run large-scale networks and who have a clear picture of the challenges of running those networks.  Martin Casado, the founder of Nicira, was instrumental in the formation of the SDN movement. Undoubtedly, the industry dialogue on this acquisition will only help in raising the profile of SDN and the change era of networking.
